Koba Sahochidze in the program "Real Doctors"

The World Health Organization has recognized obesity as a global epidemic of non-communicable origin. According to international statistics, today, there are about 2 billion overweight people in the world. There are many methods of combating excess weight, some of them are more effective, some are less, some of them require great willpower and effort, therefore, most people cannot cope with it.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that weight gain leads to various comorbidities, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and diseases related to the joints and skeletal system. Therefore, surgical intervention in the process of combating excess weight is truly a last resort, when all other methods have been tried and are ineffective.

There are different types of operations, but the most popular is sleeve gastrectomy. Koba Sakhuchidze, head of the bariatric department of the American Hospital Tbilisi, recognized as the international gold standard – JCI accreditation holder, Academic Doctor of Medicine, surgeon, talks about sleeve gastrectomy, which is a vertical resection, or excision, of the stomach, on the Rustavi 2 TV program “Real Doctors”.

One year and 8 months ago, a young, 32-year-old patient, Mariam Alavidze, underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery by Koba Sakhochidze. During the operation, along with the removed part of the stomach, the area where hunger receptors are located was also cut. As a result of the sleeve gastrectomy, the volume of the stomach decreased and as a result, Mariam lost 57 kg in weight over the course of one year and 8 months.
