But so that you may understand where this error, which accuses pleasure and praises pain, has originated, I will lay the whole matter open, and explain those very things which were said by that inventor of truth and, as it were, architect of the blessed life. For no one hates pleasure for its own sake, or turns away from it when he hears of it; but because great pains accompany those who do not know how to pursue pleasure with reason. Nor is there anyone who loves a pain for its own sake, or pursues it because he wants to get it; but there are times when a man is compelled to seek some great pleasure through labor and pain.
