Pediatrics – General Overview
American Hospital Tbilisi – AHT Pediatrics Department offers one-hour consultation for each child under 1 year of age if this is his first visit to our hospital. AHT qualified nurses oversee the child’s health and development. Professional pediatricians develop a medical care plan that is tailored to each child individually, discussing breastfeeding and other food-related issues.
During further consultations, If further consultations for prophylaxis or therapy are required, the child may be assessed by other specialists, including a pediatric orthopedist, neurologist, nephrologist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, and surgeon.
The AHT-qualified pediatrician sets out a plan detailing all the visits necessary for the child’s development during his or her rapid growth period. As our ER department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, AHT can handle any emergency medical problem, including surgery. In addition, if necessary, the child can undergo inpatient treatment in AHT’s pediatric ward.
We take care of the health of each child and to this end, we properly address fever, respiratory infections, postcovid disorders, abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, and allergic reactions.

General Pediatrics
Who is a pediatrician?
- A pediatrician is a doctor who examines newborns, children, and adolescents between the ages of one and eighteen.
A pediatrician is the first person parents seek when their child becomes unwell, but he or she does much more than merely treat the condition. Children, unlike adult patients, grow and change. A pediatrician’s role includes assessing the kid’s growth, behavior, and skill development. A pediatrician is a multidisciplinary specialist who is approached by a parent with any issues and then evaluates whether the child need the assistance of a specialist doctor.
The pediatrician’s work includes a thorough taste of the newborn. Parents frequently choose a pediatrician before the baby is born since he has frequent contact with the baby during infancy.
The pediatrician has complete information about the child’s growth, development and health status. It is very important that the relationship between parent, child and pediatrician is harmonious and based on trust. You will meet such an atmosphere in the American Hospital Tbilisi – AHT Pediatrics Department.
Infant health
Parents frequently have a lot of questions from the first day of life, especially after being discharged from the maternity unit. That is why, if this is a child’s first visit to AHT, we schedule an hour-long consultation for each child under the age of one. Pediatricians develop a medical supervision plan tailored to each child individually and assist in resolving breastfeeding issues if necessary.
Other doctors, such as pediatric orthopedists, neurologists, surgeons, or other specialists, may evaluate the child for prophylaxis during further consultation. The presence of many pediatric services in one location enables us to evaluate a young patient with many different specialists involved during a single hospital visit.
Child Neurology
Pediatric neurology is one of the pediatric department’s subspecialties. The involvement of a pediatric neurologist is recommended if the child displays:
- Unusual behavior;
- Severe headache, dizziness;
- Delay in developmental stages;
- Developed fever or other type of convulsions;
- Light trauma to the brain;
- Fainting;
- Other nonspecific symptoms.
There are certain very significant neurological issues that cannot be resolved without the intervention of a neurologist.
The professionalism, material and technical base and equipment of our hospital doctors allow us to manage acute and chronic neurological patients of any complexity of pediatric age (0-17 years).
Our priorities are as follows:
- Complete assessment of child development by age, including early identification and monitoring of children at risk of developmental problems;
- Diagnosis and management of epileptic and non-epileptic paroxysmal conditions;
- Diagnosis and management of minor brain injuries (minor injuries);
- Diagnosis and management of current pathologies with movement disorders;
- Diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative diseases in children;
- Diagnosis and management of acute emergency neurological diseases and conditions (neuroinfection, stroke, convulsions, disturbance of consciousness, acute headache, etc.).
With a new generation of equipment, the hospital can perform full-fledged clinical and laboratory tests such as neurosonoscopy, computed tomography of the brain, magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography (EEG – standard, 24-hour video monitoring of long sleep and wakefulness), duplex scanning of extra and intracranial blood vessels, and so on.
The Child Neurology Service works in close collaboration with the Neurosurgery Service, which broadens the variety of disorders for which a pediatric neurologist is sought.
The Pediatric Neurology service, like other services, is adapted to the patient’s needs, providing not only inpatient and outpatient treatments, but also day-to-day inpatient care.
Pediatric Nephrology
Pediatric nephrology is a field of medicine that treats pediatric kidneys and urinary tract. Diseases of these organs may be related to congenital conditions – abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract, as well as acquired – urinary tract infections, inflammation of the kidneys, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, kidney stone disease, enuresis and others.
We provide a kidney biopsy procedure at our hospital, which is the gold standard of diagnosis for some diseases. As for kidney stones, this is a rare but very important part of pediatric nephrology. Children with chronic kidney disorder and kidney failure will receive full medical care at American Hospital Tbilisi, and if necessary, children will be trained in kidney replacement therapy, including dialysis or kidney transplantation.
Pediatric Endocrinology
Endocrinology studies the structure and function of the endocrine glands, as well as diseases caused by their dysfunction. Pediatric endocrinology, as a separate specialty, has only recently emerged, which is associated with some characteristics of the development of endocrine diseases in children and adolescents. For example, often, diabetes in children resembles the flu, childhood infections, and acute abdominal syndrome.
The endocrine glands, which are responsible for the generation and secretion of hormones in the blood, constitute the human endocrine system. Hormones govern the work of the body and have a direct impact on the child’s growth and development. The hypothalamic-pituitary system, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, and gonads are all parts of the endocrine system.
The pediatric gynecologist-endocrinologist should also be mentioned. The doctor of this specialization in girls treats and prevents diseases of the genital organs caused by endocrine disorders.
Pediatric Cardiology
From the time the mother is pregnant until the child reaches the age of 18, our hospital’s pediatric department diagnoses, treats, or monitors cardiac disease in newborns, children, and adolescents. These are mostly congenital heart defects, such as valves and stenosis, as well as the accompanying cardiac diseases, such as rheumatic valve diseases, infectious diseases, and heart rhythm disorders.
The Pediatric Arrhythmia Center of the AHT Pediatric Department performs all types of diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders: Holter EKG, ephor test, vent recorder, intermediate signal EKG, tilt table, transthoracic echocardiographic studies, Interventional procedures of fluoroscopic ablation with triple system, cryoablation (freezing method), implantation of permanent pacemaker and defibrillator (ICD) and further monitoring.
Pediatric surgery
The pediatric surgery department at AHT diagnoses and treats surgical diseases in newborns, children, and adolescents (0-18 years). Our surgical services encompass a wide range of procedures such as:
- Abdominal surgery;
- Thoracic surgery;
- Pediatric urology;
- Pediatric Gynecology;
- Pediatric orthopedic-traumatology;
- Pediatric maxillofacial surgery;
- Otorhinolaryngology;
Pediatric surgery aims to protect the mental health of children during comfortable and painless surgeries. General anesthesia can be given to infants and children in any situation – in all surgeries, minor surgeries, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
