#AHT: International Conference on Neurology Epilepsy Experts at AHT

On April 16, an international conference held at American Hospital Tbilisi (AHT), had been opened by Gregory Kunz, Chairman of the Board of Directors at AHT.

The AHT Epilepsy Center combines two major areas of neuroscience – neurology and neurosurgery, one
of the most important of which is the Department of Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders.

According to Dr. Nino Gzirishvili, head of the AHT Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders Department, the main goal of the conference was to discuss the modern methodology of diagnosing and treating epilepsy, with all the leading neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists working in Georgia.

As Dr. Nino Gzirishvili explained, there are two main approaches to treating epilepsy – antiepileptic medications and neurosurgical intervention.

“The goal of our hospital is to improve the quality of life of patients by choosing the right treatment. While antiepileptic drugs can not cure epileptic seizures, pre-surgical evaluation of epilepsy and neurosurgical intervention are on the agenda. Epilepsy surgery is already scheduled at our hospital for the nearest future. We have just started a long term video EEG monitoring at the American Hospital Tbilisi with the latest equipment from Micromed, which is equipped with a high-resolution video camera, Principal clinical indications for Long term video EEG include: differential diagnosis between epileptic seizures and nonepileptic attacks; classification and quantification of seizure types and epilepsy syndromes, and  electroclinical characterization of focal seizures during presurgical evaluation in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy” – said neurologist Dr. Nino Gzirishvili.

Professors from Turkey – neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Mustafa Uzan and neurologist Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Özkara were invited to the international conference together with Georgian epilepsy experts.

The international conference will be held on a regular basis in order to introduce and develop modern approaches to the treatment of epilepsy in Georgia.
